On April 14, 2021, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted in response to President Joe Biden's announcement that he planned to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. Cruz called Biden's decision "a shameful and indefensible course of action" and said that it would embolden terrorists and put American lives at risk. Many people were outraged by Cruz's comments, which they saw as hypocritical given his own role in fomenting the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Cruz and other Republicans had objected to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, despite there being no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and had encouraged their supporters to protest in Washington, DC on January 6.
